Easy How to Create a Website Reddit
How To Build A Website, According to Reddit
And why people trust Reddit advice
When I'm researching products or services, I'll often find "Reddit" as a suggested search. If you go to Google and start searching "Best website …" Google suggests adding reddit to the end of your search.
Long story short, Reddit offers a lot of honest user reviews that aren't influenced by affiliate payments.
Why do people trust Reddit reviews?
If you've never visited Reddit, you need to know that redditors are brutally honest.
Most people are anonymous, and they're not afraid to tell you what they really think.
This is the opposite of what you'll find when you Google how to build a website. The top search results are filled with affiliate bloggers trying to make an extra buck.
Website-related affiliates are especially lucrative because most of the programs are recurring payments. If you refer someone to a hosting platform or email marketing, you'll get an affiliate payment every month, which is better than the one-time payments.
Here's what Redditors recommended when asked how to build a site.
Buying a domain
To start you'll need a domain name. You can get that from GoDaddy. Personally I use Namecheap but to each their own. If you register with GoDaddy and choose another company to host with, you will need to point your domain to your hosting provider (they can help with this).
I usually buy domain names from the hosting company I use (NixiHost), but you can search around and find cheaper prices.
The server is where the web hosting company comes in. They own the servers and sell you space to use it. Yes GoDaddy does this, but I don't recommend registering your domain and hosting your site with the same people.
Let's backtrack here.
Squarespace, WordPress.com, and Wix are web builders meaning you won't need a separate web host as they provide the domain and the hosting.
This is the easiest way to go for you because of the drag and drop usability. But these builders are limited as far as customization down the road (they can only do so much).
I paid a lot of money for a WordPress.com business plan that helped me overpay for a lame website.
Okay, back on schedule now.
Content Management Systems
Once you're up and going with your host, now it's time to choose a CMS (Content Management System).
You mentioned that you used WordPress and Joomla. These are different from Squarespace and Wix because they are standalone CMS's so you will need a separate web host. Shared hosting costs $5–10/month.
Question: If you recommend Wordpress, what plan would you recommend?
Answer: You're thinking about WordPress.com, which is basically the same as Wix.
What you're looking for is WordPress.org. It's free to download and it's open source (coding language).
Most web hosts offer one click installs for both WordPress and Joomla. So if you decide to go that route you would need to install one of the two systems within your hosting account (cPanel or control panel).
Once you have one of the two installed, you can go into your admin which is where you can then download a theme to use for your site and begin to add content.
Alternatively, for your simple needs you probably would do well with a static site CMS. But, the learning curve might be more than you want to take on. You'd need to understand some basic coding.
Here's the order I recommend you take to chose your path:
- WordPress
- Joomla
- Static Site CMS (Jekyll, Hugo, Stasis, etc.)
- Wix
- Squarespace
(I put Squarespace last because it's more oriented towards eCommerce)
3 Tips From Another Redditor
Definitely buy your own domain name as it's more professional. I wouldn't recommend GoDaddy though. They have horrible user interface and they try to sell you so much "add on crap" as you so eloquently pointed out. I suggest buying your domain name from NameCheap. It's only $10/year and it includes a privacy add-on that you probably need to pay extra from GoDaddy. ONLY STICK with .com names. DO NOT go with .net, .info etc. don't do dashes either. It helps you from an SEO standpoint and just looks more professional.
Side note: a different TLD (.co, .io, .xyz, etc.) does not impact your SEO. .com is still the most trusted TLD, but you don't need to worry about it too much.
2. You can go with any shared hosting service for now. You don't need the expensive servers yet since you won't have that much traffic anyway. Hostgator or BlueHost are good options. They're cheap and pretty straightforward with easy tutorials on how to go about things. The important thing is to have cPanel. This is basically the user interface for the hosting that's point and click. So you don't need to know any coding or to go into the terminal when interacting with your host provider.
Side note #2: I'd never recommend Bluehost because it's overpriced and lame. The Reddit r/webhosting community recommends NixiHost, VeeroTech, iWebFusion, and KnownHost. I switched from SiteGround to NixiHost and am happy so far.
3. I wouldn't suggest Squarespace or Wix. They're honestly too bulky and slow for me. Just go with WordPress. It's absolutely free. You can download WordPress and "install" it to your web host. I think some web host even have a one click installation feature for WordPress. Now this part is a little bit more complicated but it's still pretty simple. You need to create a database in your cPanel (from your host) to connect the WordPress installation but there should be a lot of good tutorials out there. Then you can just download a free theme that you like or buy a theme that you like to install to WordPress. You can check Elegant Themes or ThemeForest for WordPress themes. That should keep your costs pretty minimal.
Good luck!
Whenever people ask where they should start a blog, I almost always recommend Medium or WordPress.
I use Wordpress to build websites, and those websites also have a blog section. Building a website requires some more learning and takes a bit longer to set up, but you have lots of freedom to make it look exactly how you want. I spend $10–20 per year for a domain and $6/month for hosting the website.
I also use Medium as a blogging platform. It's free, easier and faster to setup, and you don't need to worry about technical things like SEO, plug-ins, website speed, links, etc. You have less design freedom, but this is a great place to start.
